South 18th Street was originally named Meadow Street.[1][2][3][4][5]:104–105
The street was renamed 18th Street by an East Birmingham borough ordinance in 1869.[6] The "South" prefix was added by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1881;[7] see South First Street for more details.
The portion of the street in the South Side Slopes, south of Josephine Street, was originally called the Brownsville Plank Road.[1][5]:116 It was renamed South 18th Street Extension in 1881.[7]
