South Ninth Street was originally named Craig Street.[1][2][3][4][5] Today, of course, Craig Street is a street in North Oakland.
In 1869, an ordinance of the Birmingham borough council numbered all of the north–south streets. This ordinance apparently gave the name Ninth Street to Ewing Street, not Craig Street (but Craig is not listed).[6] The "South" prefix was added by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1881;[7] see South First Street for more details.
