33rd Street was laid out in 1871 as part of the borough of Ormsby.[1][2] Its name followed the sequence of numbered streets established in the borough of Birmingham in 1869[3] and in East Birmingham about the same time.[4]
The "South" prefix was added by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1881;[5] see South First Street for more details.
