South 17th Street was originally named Harmony Street[1][2][3][4][5] or Harmony Alley.[6][7] It formed the eastern boundary of the borough of Birmingham.

Harmony Street was renamed 17th Street by ordinances of the Birmingham and East Birmingham borough councils in 1869.[8][9] The "South" prefix was added by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1881;[10] see South First Street for more details.
