This street appears as Fourth Street in the 1852 map of R. E. McGowin in the easternmost part of the borough of South Pittsburgh.[1] It was laid out sometime between 1835 and 1845, probably in the first half of the 1840s. It appears at the edge of a plan of lots laid out in 1845.[2] It became South Fourth Street in 1881.[3]
