The original name of 22nd Street was Lumber Street. Bruce S. Cridlebaugh says that in 1872 there were five lumberyards on 21st and 22nd Streets between the railroad and the river.[1]
In 1868, Pittsburgh's modern sequence of numbered streets was created by renaming all the streets perpendicular to the Allegheny River; Lumber Street became 22nd Street.[1][2][3]
