36th Street was laid out in 1871 as part of the borough of Ormsby.[1][2] Its name followed the sequence of numbered streets established in the borough of Birmingham in 1869[3] and in East Birmingham about the same time.[4]
The "South" prefix was added by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1881;[5] see South First Street for more details.
South 36th Street was never much of a street. In the 1872 Hopkins atlas it is drawn several blocks long, from Larkins Alley to the Monongahela River, in accordance with the Ormsby Borough plan,[2] but this seems to have been rather aspirational. The 1882 edition more realistically shows it spanning only half a block between Sarah Street and Larkins Alley (though it is mislabeled "S. 34th St.").[6] By 1901 it was covered by the tracks of the Pittsburgh, Virginia and Charleston Railway.[7] South 36th Street was vacated in 1928 in accordance with an agreement that had been made with the railroad in 1901.[8][9]
