Villa Street (Friendship)

Villa Street
Neighborhood Friendship
Fate Became part of Roup Street in 1891 and part of Fairmount Street in 1896/1915

Friendship formerly had a street named Villa Street, consisting of what is today the portion of Roup Avenue from Penn Avenue to Harriet Street and the part of Fairmount Street from Harriet Street to Baum Boulevard.

Villa Street was first laid out in a "plan of streets through the Roup farm" approved by City Councils in 1869.[1] In this original plan, Villa Street ran northwest–southeast from Rebecca Street (today Aiken Avenue) to Negley Avenue, between Harriet Street and Friendship Avenue.[2][3]

The plan of streets in this district was modified in 1882 and 1886.[4][5] These modifications put Villa Street almost perpendicular to its former course, running from Baum Street (now Baum Boulevard) to Penn Avenue.[6][7]

In 1891, most of Villa Street, from Harriet Street to Penn Avenue, was made part of Roup Street, today Roup Avenue.[8]

The remaining part of Villa Street, from Baum Street to Harriet Street, was made part of Fairmount Street in 1896.[9] However, when a city ordinance officially established the names of all streets in Pittsburgh in 1910, the list included "Villa, from Baum av. to Roup av., 8th wd.,"[10] probably by mistake. This was fixed in 1915, when another ordinance again made Villa Street part of Fairmount Street.[11]
