This alley was originally named Springer Alley, laid out in 1891 in the Beechwood Park plan to the north and south of Hastings Avenue (today Hastings Street).[1] In 1893, a city ordinance extended this alley (on paper, at least), making it over half a mile long, from Irwin Avenue (today Aylesboro Avenue) to the northern property line of J. J. Vandergrift north of the Beechwood Park plan, about as far north as the Point Breeze portion of Denniston Street runs today.[2]
At about the same time, the Homewood Summit plan extended Springer Alley south of Irwin Avenue, running most of the way to Forbes Avenue to meet Kay Alley (later Kay Way).[3]
Two ordinances in 1900 and 1901 eliminated Springer Alley north of Hastings Street.[4][5]
In 1901, to fix the duplication with another Springer Alley in Highland Park and Morningside (today Springer Way), Springer Alley between Irwin Avenue and Hastings Street was renamed Keith Alley.[6] It seems that the part of the alley south of Irwin Avenue, laid out in the 1893 Homewood Summit plan, was overlooked.
In 1914, Keith Alley became Keith Way, and the southern remainder of Springer Alley became Springer Way, when an ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[7]
In 1925, the existence of the Springer Way south of Aylesboro Avenue was finally noticed, and City Council made it part of Keith Way.[8]
Today Keith Way survives as a short dead-end alley north of Wilkins Avenue and another short dead-end alley south of Aylesboro Avenue, both between Shady Avenue and Denniston Street. Only the northern piece has a street sign.
