Neighborhoods | Homewood North, Homewood West |
Origin of name | Mount Vernon, the estate of George Washington |
Mount Vernon Street was laid out by James Kelly, who once owned much of the land that became the neighborhood of Homewood.[1][2][3] It is named for Mount Vernon, the estate of George Washington in Fairfax County, Virginia. Nearby Hermitage Street and Monticello Street are also named for presidential estates.
Mount Vernon Street was shifted slightly northward in 1898 when the Kedron plan of lots was laid out, which inserted Kedron Street between Hermitage and Mount Vernon Streets.[4]
