Snively Way

From Pittsburgh Streets
Snively Way
Neighborhood East Liberty
Sharp Alley (until 1910)
Origin of name Probably J. Sharp
Conestoga Alley (until 1910)
Snively Alley (1910–1914)

Snively Way was originally Sharp Alley (between St. Clair Street and Beatty Street) and Conestoga Alley (perpendicular to Livery Way). These alleys first appeared in the 1890 Hopkins atlas.[1]

The portion of Sharp Alley east of St. Clair Street was renamed Snively Alley in 1910; the part between Chislett Street and Samantha Alley remained Sharp Alley (today Sharp Way). Conestoga Alley was renamed Casanova Alley (today Casanova Way) to avoid confusion with Conestoga Street in Sheraden.[2][3] Over 900 streets were renamed by this ordinance, whose main goal was the elimination of duplicate names. As with many of these changes, the intended meanings of the new names are not entirely clear, though a common pattern was the preservation of the first letter of the street name. The 1910 city directory lists seven people and two businesses with the name Snively,[4][a] including Harry A. Snively (1866–1913), who was the chief clerk in the Department of Public Works at the time.[5][6] Snively Alley became Snively Way in 1914, when a city ordinance changed all alleys to ways.[7]
