A road in the location of modern Mossfield Street appears in the 1862 map of S. N. and F. W. Beers.[1] It is labeled Morningside Road in the 1872 Hopkins atlas, together with modern Morningside Avenue.[2]
An 1881 city ordinance established the name Morningside Avenue, but only for the part of the road between Butler Street and Stanton Avenue.[3] The rest of the road, which had become disconnected from Morningside Avenue, apparently kept the name Morningside Road until 1910,[4] when it was changed to Mossfield Street.[5]
