Neighborhoods Central Northside, East Allegheny
West Street (until ca. 1870)
Origin of name Its location in a subdivision

This street appears as West Street in R. E. McGowin's 1852 map. It was one of three north–south streets—West Street, Middle Street, and North Street (today East Street)—that had been laid out in out lots 141 and 144 and half of out lots 140 and 145 in the original plan of Allegheny.[1][2] (See East Street for more details.)

The northern part of the street was named James Street in plans of lots from 1838 and 1847.[3][4] By 1872 this name had been applied to the whole street.[5]
