This street was originally named Tunnel Street because it runs alongside and above the Cork Run Tunnel, built by the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Railroad between 1851 and 1865.
An 1862 Allegheny County map shows the railroad tunnel, but no street alongside.[1] The street is shown, unlabeled, in the 1876 Hopkins atlas; it is drawn as the southeastern edge of N. P. Sawyer's plan of Ashchenaz.[2] However, the Ashchenaz plan itself, laid out in 1869, shows that the southeastern edge of the plan (Berry Avenue, today Tyndall Street) was 380 feet from the tunnel,[3] so this appears to be an inaccuracy in the Hopkins atlas.
Tunnel Street is labeled in Andrew Patterson's 1883 plan of his addition to Sheraden, in the 1886 Hopkins atlas, and in the 1888 second addition to Sheraden.[4][5][6]
The Sheraden Terrace plan, laid out in 1891, included Harwood Avenue to the northeast of Chartiers Avenue along the course of modern Hillsboro Street and Hammond Street.[7] The name Harwood was formed from the names of the developers of this plan, Harmon and Wood. By 1896, Tunnel Street had been renamed Harwood Street.[8]
Sheraden Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907.[9] Pittsburgh already had a Harwood Street in Mount Washington, so Harwood Street and a short piece of Harwood Avenue were together renamed Hillsboro Street in 1908. (The rest of Harwood Avenue became Hammond Street.)[10]
