The majority of this street was laid out as Villa Street in 1860 in a plan of the land owned by John, Martin, Mathias, and Jacob Voegtly.[1] Villa Street appears in an 1864 plan of lots by Jacob Voegtly,[2] in an 1873 plan by Mathias Voegtly,[3] and in the 1872 Hopkins atlas.[4]
The easternmost end of modern Voskamp Street, east of the steps leading up to Lowrie Street and down to Tell Street, was laid out as Angle Street in 1858 in a plan of lots by Adam Reineman.[5]
Allegheny City was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907.[6] Pittsburgh already had an Angle Street in Elliott, and the city apparently mistakenly believed that there was a Villa Street in Friendship (in reality this Villa Street had been absorbed into Roup Street and Fairmount Street in the 1890s). Over 900 streets were renamed in 1910 to fix such duplications: in Troy Hill, Villa Street was changed to Voskamp Street, and Angle Street to Ancona Street.[7]
Ancona Street was made part of Voskamp Street in 1912.[8]
