| Neighborhood | Carrick |
| Origin of name | Its status as a continuation of Wysox Street |
This alley was first laid out in a 1906 plan of lots by Bertha Mewes as half of a proposed 40-foot-wide street running along a property line (with the expectation that the adjoining property owner would dedicate the other 20 feet). This plan did not give this proposed street a name. At the north end of this proposed street was a 50-foot-wide street named Willis Avenue, which appears to have been envisioned to continue into the adjoining property.[1] Mewes revised her plan in 1910, but the 20-foot half of the proposed 40-foot street remained anonymous.[2]
After Carrick was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1927,[3] Willis Avenue in Mewes' plan was renamed Wysox Street.[4]
In 1929, the Raleigh Square Land Company laid out the Raleigh Square plan of lots on the property adjoining Mewes' plan. The Raleigh Square plan extended Edgar Street westward instead of Wysox Street, and did not contribute the expected 20-foot width to the proposed 40-foot street in Mewes' plan between Edgar Street and Valera Street. Instead, the Raleigh Square plan left it as a 20-foot-wide alley named Wysox Way (as an extension of Wysox Street). This plan did create a 40-foot-wide continuation of Wysox Street between Valera Street and Maytide Street, which no longer exists.[5]
