Covode Street
Neighborhood Squirrel Hill South
Origin of name George H. Covode
Belmont Street (until 1910)

This street was originally named Belmont Street, officially located by a city ordinance in 1886.[1][2] (The 1890 Hopkins atlas labels it "Bryson St.,"[3] but this is an error: Bryson Street was today's Darlington Road.) In 1902, the Schenley Heights plan replaced the easternmost end of Belmont Street, at its intersection with Wightman Street, with a diagonal street named Covode Street.[4] Belmont Street was made part of Covode Street in 1910.[5] Covode Street was straightened by a pair of ordinances in 1916, which rerouted the diagonal part of the street (the original Covode Street) to the original route of Belmont Street.[6][7]

Covode Street is named for George H. Covode (1835–1864), colonel of the 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry in the American Civil War, killed at St. Mary's Church on June 24, 1864. James H. Childs, eponym of Childs Street, was an earlier colonel of the same regiment.[8]
