This street was laid out as Sherman Avenue in 1891 in the Sheraden Terrace plan[1] and was extended in the Melrose plan two years later.[2]
The portion northwest of the line of Ashlyn Street was laid out as Water Street in the 1901 Keystone plan.[3] Water Street appears to have become part of Sherman Avenue by 1905.[4]
Sheraden Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907.[5] Pittsburgh already had a Sherman Street in Lawrenceville (today Sherrod Street), and later in 1907 Pittsburgh annexed Allegheny City and gained Sherman Avenue on the North Side, so the street in Sheraden was renamed Stafford Street in 1908.[6]
