Rentz Way

This alley was laid out as Rentz Alley, from Amanda Street to Knox Avenue, in a plan recorded in 1873.[1] It was extended westward, from Knox Avenue to Beltzhoover Avenue, in another plan recorded in 1880, which spelled the name Rantz;[2] the spelling difference was probably unintentional.
Knoxville Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1927.[3] All alleys in Pittsburgh had been changed to ways by a city ordinance in 1914,[4] so Rentz Alley probably began to be called Rentz Way about this time.
In 1933, a Pittsburgh city ordinance officially changed Rantz Way to Rentz Way,[5] probably just to resolve any uncertainty about the spelling of the name.
