Post Street

From Pittsburgh Streets
Post Street
Neighborhood Central Lawrenceville
Wells Street (until 1881)
Origin of name Samuel Wells

This street was laid out in 1862 in a plan of lots for Samuel Wells. Two versions of the plan were recorded in 1871 because the first version was "erroneous," but it is not clear that the second version was free of errors itself. In both versions this street was labeled Keller Street (with modern Kellar Street labeled "Keller Alley" in the second version), but the 1882 Hopkins atlas shows instead that it was named Wells Street, which the second version of Wells' plan gave to what is now Geneva Street. Even Wells' name is different between the two versions of the plan: the first version calls him Samuel F. Wells, while he is Samuel T. Wells in the second version.[1][2][3]

This street was renamed Post Street by a city ordinance in 1881, which says that it was previously named Wells Street. It was renamed to avoid confusion with Well Street in Duquesne Heights (which this ordinance renamed Wells Street).[4]
