Origin of name Perhaps from "Excelsior," the state motto of New York, from Latin excelsior 'higher'
Payne Street (until 1910)

Pegg Street (1910–1927)
Portion East of Beltzhoover Avenue

The portion of this street west of Beltzhoover Avenue was laid out in 1903 in the Grandview plan by Clifford B. Harmon. Harmon named it Excelsior Street even though it was somewhat offset from Excelsior Street in Allentown.[1]

The part east of Beltzhoover Avenue was laid out as Payne Street in 1905 in a plan of lots by William J. Payne.[2]

In 1910, over 900 streets were renamed to fix duplicates. Payne Street conflicted with Payne Way in Elliott, so it was renamed Pegg Street.[3]

In 1915, the part of Excelsior Street west of Beltzhoover Avenue was renamed Edgemont Street.[4] Pegg Street was made part of Edgemont Street in 1927.[5]
