Nicholson Street

From Pittsburgh Streets
Nicholson Street
Neighborhood Squirrel Hill South
Nicholson Avenue (until 1910)

This street was first called Nicholson Avenue by a city ordinance in 1900, which established its location from Beechwood Avenue (today Beechwood Boulevard) to Pocussett Avenue (today Pocusset Street).[1] The part between Murray Avenue and Pocussett Avenue was repealed in 1903.[2]

The segment between Beechwood Avenue and Shady Avenue formed the southern boundary of the 1903 Country Club plan, which called it "Nicholson St."[3] This segment was opened in 1905 as Nicholson Street.[4]

The portion between Shady Avenue and Murray Avenue was laid out in a different location in the 1907 Shady Avenue plan and the 1908 Hallett Shady Avenue plan.[5][6] Ebenezer Hallett, who laid out the 1908 plan, and John C. and William B. Sneathen, who owned the adjacent property, dedicated land for the street,[7][8] and its official location was changed accordingly.[9][10]

The name Nicholson Street was officially established by a city ordinance in 1910.[11]
