Bascom Street

(Redirected from Klein Street)
Bascom Street
Neighborhood Perry North
Benton Avenue (until 1910)

This road appears, unlabeled, in maps of Allegheny County from the 1850s and 1860s.[1][2] It was originally considered part of Benton Avenue.[3][4][5][6]

After Allegheny City was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907,[7] it was felt to be confusing to have two disconnected segments of road both named Benton Avenue, so the eastern part was renamed Bascom Street by a city ordinance in 1910.[8]

In 1925, postal authorities put together a plan to rename some 150 city streets to fix duplication with streets in the suburbs. They proposed to change Bascom Street to Klein Street, but this change was opposed by City Council and the name Bascom was kept.[9]

The part of the road in Ross Township is named Bascom Avenue. It was renamed from Benton Avenue (or Klein Road) in 1953 to match the name in Pittsburgh.[10]
