Klein Road Is Really Benton Avenue, But It Will Be Changed to 'Bascom'

Residents of Klein Road in Ross Township are in for a shock.

They don't really live on Klein Road. They live on Benton Avenue.

This was learned yesterday when the County Commissioners decided to straighten out a "confusing situation" along Klien [sic] Road . . . er, Benton Avenue.

Named in 1924

They've decided to re-name it Bascom Avenue.

This seems to be the only way out of a mess that has been getting worse for 39 years.

Here is what happened:

The County constructed the 1½-mile street back in 1924, giving it the official name of Benton Avenue.

This caused confusion because there is another Benton Avenue nearby in the City of Pittsburgh.

Hence, the bewildered residents decided to call it Klein Road. This wasn't a very happy solution because it is now marked by street signs which read Klein Road at some places and Kline Road at others.

The whole baffling matter was aired yesterday before the County Commissioners. At the suggestion of Works Director Levi Bird Duff, they want to re-name it Bascom Avenue.

Extension of Avenue

This name was selected inasmuch as Benton Avenue is an extension of Pittsburgh's Bascom Avenue.

The street runs through Ross Township from Bascom Avenue in the City to Brighton Road.

County Solicitor Nathaniel K. Beck was instructed to look into the legality of making the proposed switch in names.

'Air Age' Theme of Prom At Stowe High Tonight

The Pennsylvania Air National Guard has supplied a realistic touch to the "Air Age" theme of Stowe Township High School's junior-senior prom tonight.

Six multi-colored cargo parachutes, on loan from the Guard, are the main decorations in the school's combination gymnasium-auditorium where the dance will be held.

The students, directed by Teachers Louis J. Corsetti and Harold R. Phelps, have done the decorating.
