This street was laid out as Randall Avenue in 1904 in the Fleming Place plan.[1] It was renamed Knowlson Avenue by a West Liberty borough ordinance in 1907.[2]

West Liberty Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1908.[3] The following year, a Pittsburgh city ordinance changed Knowlson Avenue to Kenilworth Street.[4]
