| Origin of name | John A. Kaercher |
A road in the location of modern Kaercher Street east of Gladstone Street appears in a land survey made in 1851 for John W. Butler, John S. Cosgrove, and William M. Sinclair.[1] An 1862 map of Allegheny County shows this road running to modern Bigelow Street, probably following the line of modern Bristol Street.[2] An 1873 plan of the estate of Joseph Winders includes the portion of Kaercher Street west of Gladstone Street, as well as Bristol Street, though it does not give these streets names.[3]
A petition for lamps on "Kaercher Avenue" was presented in Common Council in 1879.[4] An 1881 city ordinance that officially established the names of all streets in Pittsburgh named it Kaercher Street.[5]
It is named for John A. Kaercher, who owned the land in the area bounded by modern Kaercher Street, Gladstone Street, Randall Street, and Stanley Street.[6][7][8][9][10][11]
