This street was laid out as Arthur Street in 1900 in the Bon-Air and Bandi Farm plans of lots.[1][2] It was renamed Iliad Avenue by a West Liberty Borough ordinance in 1907.[3] West Liberty Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1908,[4] and the following year a Pittsburgh city ordinance changed the name again to Institute Street.[5]

The northernmost part of Institute Street, from Roseton Avenue to Clanton Street, was originally part of Bon Air Avenue. It was made part of Institute Street in 1941.[6]
