This street was originally laid out as Henry Street in 1871 in a plan of lots for William Carr and William E. Schmertz.[1] This name conflicted with that of Henry Street in North Oakland, so it was renamed Hodge Street by a city ordinance in 1881.[2]
The part of Hodge Street connecting to Bates Street was laid out in 1898 as an unnamed alley in a plan of lots by the Peoples Savings Bank.[3]
Henry or Hodge Street originally connected to Halket Street at Frazier Street, and Halket Street ran north to Wilmot Street (today the Boulevard of the Allies).[4] This portion of Halket Street was made part of Hodge Street in 1908.[5] Hodge Street no longer connects to the Boulevard of the Allies.
