This alley was laid out in a series of plans in the 1890s, though none of them gave it a name.[1][2][3][4][5]
It was named Drake Way by a city ordinance in 1919.[6] This was the name of an alley in the same line but some distance to the north, modern Teak Way, which had been named Drake Alley in 1904 when it was laid out in a plan of lots for L. Vilsack[7][8] and became Drake Way in 1914, when an ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[9]
The two segments of Drake Way were never joined, and apparently it was confusing to have two separate alleys both named Drake Way, so in 1925 the original Drake Way was renamed Teak Way.[10]
