This alley appears as Arion Alley in the 1905 Hopkins atlas.[1]
In 1908, West Liberty borough (today's neighborhoods of Brookline and Beechwood) was annexed into the city of Pittsburgh.[2][3] The name Arion conflicted with Arion Street in Mount Washington, so in 1909 Arion Alley was renamed Alvena Alley.[4] This new name was confirmed by another ordinance the next year that established the names of all streets in the city.[5] It became Alvena Way in 1914 when an ordinance changed all alleys in the city to ways.[6]
An ordinance in 1933 claimed to rename Arion Way to Vis Way,[7] but since Arion Alley had been renamed 24 years earlier, this had no effect.
