This street was laid out as Smith Avenue in 1873 in the Riverside plan of lots by B. C. Sawyer.[1] In 1893, the streets in Esplen were numbered, and Smith Avenue became 11th Street.[2][3]
Esplen Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh in January 1906.[4] That September, a Pittsburgh city ordinance renamed many streets in the old borough, and 11th Street became Edgecliffe Street (with a final E).[5] The spelling was changed to Edgecliff Street, without the final E, by another ordinance in 1910;[6] this may have been unintentional, as the ordinance does not indicate that the name was being changed.
The formerly numbered streets in Esplen form one of Pittsburgh's F–S–T sequences.
