Summit Street (1871–1881)
Origin of name Its location at the top of the hillside

This street was first laid out as part of Summit Alley in 1868 in a plan of lots by Samuel Garrison, so named for its location at the top of the hillside covered by the plan.[1] In 1871, a larger plan of lots laid out for the heirs of Samuel Garrison widened part of the alley and named it Summit Street (the remaining part of the alley later became Java Way).[2]

In 1881, many Pittsburgh streets were renamed to fix duplicates. Pittsburgh had four Summit Streets, so this one in Morningside was changed to Witherspoon Street.[3]
