Sheridan Square is the last block of Sheridan Avenue, from Penn Avenue to Centre Avenue.
It appears, unlabeled, in the 1862 map of S. N. and F. W. Beers.[1] An 1873 plan of lots by Levi Wilson labels it William Street but says that by then it had been changed to Washington Street.[2][3]
After the annexation of the East End in 1868[4] and the South Side boroughs in 1872,[5] Pittsburgh had at least seven streets named Washington. In 1873, an ordinance to fix duplicate street names was presented; it would have renamed this street White Street.[6][7][8] However, this ordinance was never enacted, and for the next eight years Pittsburgh continued to have an overabundance of Washington Streets. Finally, in 1881, a street-renaming ordinance was passed that changed this street to Wilburforce Street.[9] This name was probably an unintentional misspelling, as the more common spelling of the name is Wilberforce. Indeed, the same ordinance spelled the name Wilberforce when giving it as the terminus of Shakespeare Street.[9] The 1890 Hopkins atlas labels it "Wilberforce St."[10]
An 1888 city ordinance (which used the spelling Wilberforce) made it part of Sheridan Street, today Sheridan Avenue.[11]
The name Sheridan Square was chosen in 1913 for a theater on the triangular lot bounded by Penn, Centre, and Sheridan Avenues,[12][13] and the city council approved a corresponding name change for the street shortly after the theater opened.[14][15][16]
