The rectangle that is today bounded by Sedgwick Street, California Avenue, A Street, and Union Dale Cemetery was surveyed as "out lots" numbered 243 and 244 in the 1787 survey of the "Reserve Tract" by David Redick. Each of these out lots was a square 40 perches (660 feet) on a side, containing 10 acres. They were sold at auction in 1788 to Charles Wilkins and John Irwin.[1][2][3][4]:2–3 In 1872 these out lots, still undeveloped, were owned by the estate of William Robinson, Jr., and a Kirkpatrick (see General Robinson Street and Kirkbride Street).[5][4]:62–63

By 1882 this area had been subdivided into lots and streets had been laid out. The north–south streets, from east to west, were named A Street, B Street, C Street, and D Street.[6][7][8][9] In 1891, the latter two streets were renamed: C Street to Saint Mark's Place[10] and D Street to St. Clair Terrace[11] (today St. Ives Street). The apostrophe in the name was confirmed by a 1910 Pittsburgh city ordinance that officially established the names of all streets in the city.[12] However, current street signs omit the apostrophe.
