2017: Source:Wilson-helen, p. 28: "Local lore has it that before European settlers arrived in the mid-1700s, Native Americans used Squirrel Hill as a hunting ground and named it for the hordes of squirrels frisking about. The settlers found the squirrels a nuisance, getting into grain stores and damaging crops. However, breaded and fried, they made good eating."
