Munhall Road

Munhall Road
Neighborhood Squirrel Hill South
Origin of name J. Munhall

Munhall Road is named for J. Munhall, who owned 5.36 acres of land at the intersection of Hobart Street and Murray Avenue, including the land through which the middle part of Munhall Road runs.[1] The western part of Hobart Street was originally named Munhall Avenue, also for J. Munhall.

Munhall Road had a tumultuous early legislative history. Its location was first established from Wightman Street to Beacon Street by a city ordinance in June 1912 and another ordinance, essentially identical, that November.[2][3] Both of these ordinances were repealed in June 1913,[4][5] and the following month another ordinance established a slightly different location, still from Wightman Street to Beacon Street.[6] Its grade was established in May 1914.[7]

In July 1919, an ordinance was introduced in City Council to repeal the 1913 location ordinance; it was referred to the Committee on Public Service and Surveys and no further action was taken.[8]:479 That September, a petition was presented in City Council asking that Munhall Road be opened, and a corresponding ordinance was introduced.[8]:584 In January 1920, another petition for its opening was presented,[9] and Munhall Road was officially opened as located in 1913.[10]

In November 1924, the 1913 location ordinance and the 1920 opening ordinance were repealed, being replaced by an ordinance accepting a dedication of land for Munhall Road and opening and officially naming it. The new Munhall Road was a dead end, no longer extending to Wightman Street.[11][12][13] Finally, in December 1925, the location of the western end of the road was changed, resulting in the modern alignment.[14][15]
