This street was laid out as McCullough Street (or "McCollough Street") in a plan of lots subdividing the estate of John Chislett, recorded in 1870.[1][2][3] It was renamed Maryland Street by a city ordinance in 1881,[4] and then changed to Bancroft Street in 1901 to avoid confusion with Maryland Avenue in Shadyside.[5]
