A road in the location of modern Johnston Avenue appears in the 1872 Hopkins atlas, bordering land owned by "Mrs. Johnston." The 1882 edition labels the road Johnston Avenue and shows that many adjacent parcels of land were owned by the estate of M. E. Johnston.
