Estella Avenue

From Pittsburgh Streets
(Redirected from Howard Avenue)
Estella Avenue
Neighborhoods Beltzhoover, Mount Washington
Howard Avenue (until 1898)

This avenue was originally laid out as Howard Avenue by Benjamin McLain and Thomas S. Maple in their first plan of Beltzhoover, recorded in 1874.[1]

When Beltzhoover Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1898,[2] the name Howard conflicted with Howard Alley in Lawrenceville (later Hyoid Way), so two months after the annexation a Pittsburgh city ordinance changed Howard Avenue to Estella Avenue.[3]

Estella Avenue was extended north of Warrington Avenue in 1903 in Clifford B. Harmon's Grandview plan.[4]
