Davenport Street

From Pittsburgh Streets
Davenport Street
Neighborhood Middle Hill
Origin of name Modification of Davis, its original name
Davis Street
Origin of name J. Grosvenor Davis, or the Davis family generally

This street was laid out as Davis Street in 1855 in the J. Grosvenor Davis plan of lots, laid out by Thomas M. Howe, trustee of E. N. Davis.[1] The 1852 map of R. E. McGowin shows that the land through which the street runs had previously been owned by John D. Davis.[2]

After Allegheny City was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907,[3] the name of Davis Street conflicted with that of Davis Avenue on the North Side. Over 900 streets were renamed in 1910 to fix such duplicates, and Davis Street became Davenport Street.[4] The name Davenport is probably just a modification of Davis; it preserves the initial three letters.
