This alley was laid out in a plan of lots by John Keating,[1] though that plan appears not to have given it a name. It appears, unlabeled, in the 1852 map of R. E. McGowin.[2]

An 1881 city ordinance intended to establish the names of all thoroughfares in Pittsburgh did not include this alley. Davis Street (modern Davenport Street) is described as running only "from Wylie avenue to Webster avenue."[3]

Allegheny City was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907.[4] In 1910, Davis Street was renamed Davenport Street to avoid confusion with Davis Avenue in Brighton Heights, and by extension the unnamed alley that continued Davis Street to the north was named Davenport Alley.[5]

Davenport Alley became Davenport Way in 1914, when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[6]
