A road in the location of the northwestern part of modern Commercial Street appears in the 1872 Hopkins atlas.[1] Commercial Street was laid out in 1872 as part of the plan of North Homestead, which straddled the line between the City of Pittsburgh and the Borough of Swissvale.[2][3] The two halves were connected by 1890.[4]
