Chalfont Street

From Pittsburgh Streets
Chalfont Street
Neighborhood Beltzhoover
Origin of name Maybe Chalfont, Pennsylvania
Seventh Street (until 1898)
Origin of name Sequential numbering of streets beginning with Warrington Avenue

This street was laid out in 1874 as Seventh Street by Benjamin McLain and Thomas S. Maple in their first plan of Beltzhoover, so named because it was the seventh street in the plan, starting with Washington Avenue (today Warrington Avenue).[1] This numbering continued a system begun in 1866 in the original plan of Allentown.[2]

The Borough of Beltzhoover was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1898.[3] Two months later, a Pittsburgh city ordinance renamed many of the streets in Beltzhoover to fix duplicates; since Pittsburgh already had a Seventh Street downtown, this street was changed to Chalfont Street.[4]

Chalfont Street may be named for the borough of Chalfont, Pennsylvania, in Bucks County; see Industry Street for more details.
