The first part of this street, between Stanton Avenue and 52nd Street, was laid out as Carnegie Avenue in 1872 for "Messrs. Carnegie and Co.," namely, David McCandless, John Scott, Thomas M. Carnegie, and William Coleman.[1] The name was officially established as Carnegie Street by a city ordinance in 1881.[2]
