Bigelow Square was created in 1951 from portions of Telegraph Square (previously and later Gazette Square) and Webster Avenue.[1] The change had been requested by the Bigelow Apartments there, claiming that their address was "somewhat confused."[2][3] Bigelow Square originally consisted of the block of Webster Avenue or Bigelow Boulevard between Tunnel Street and Chatham Street.[1]
In the early 1980s, many streets were realigned for the Grant Street East project. As part of this change, Ross Street was extended northward from its former terminus at Fifth Avenue to the rerouted Sixth Avenue, opposite Bigelow Square.[4][5] At one point it was proposed to name this Ross Street extension Bigelow Square,[6][7] but it appears to have been named Ross Street after all.
Today Bigelow Square remains the name of the street from Sixth Avenue to Chatham Street, on the northwest side of the DoubleTree Hotel.
