The portion of modern Sloan Way between Hollydale Way and Bagdad Way was laid out in 1882 in a plan of lots by Mrs. M. L. McGunnegle, though that plan did not give it a name.[1]

The segment between Tabor Street and Florien Street was laid out in 1883 in a plan of lots by Thomas H. Hunter, but again this plan left it unnamed.[2]

A continuation of this latter alley to the southeast had been laid out as Sloan Street in an 1884 plan of lots by Emma M. Bell[3] and an 1890 plan of lots by John A. and Samuel L. Wood.[4] (A revised version of Bell's plan was recorded in 1892.)[5] In 1893, an Esplen borough ordinance made the unnamed alley in Hunter's plan part of Sloan Street (despite calling it an "alley"). This ordinance also named the alley in McGunnegle's plan Beech Alley.[6]

Esplen Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh in January 1906.[7] That September, a Pittsburgh city ordinance officially established the names of the streets and alleys in the new Fortieth Ward, renaming many of them to fix duplicates. It changed Beech Alley to Babylon Alley, probably to avoid confusion with Beach Avenue in Garfield (today Breesport Street). It also listed "Sloan street and alley, between Frustum street and Tabor street."[8] It appears that the intent here was that the portion between Frustum Street and Florien Street should be Sloan Street, while the portion between Florien Street and Tabor Street should be Sloan Alley.

In 1914, Babylon Alley and Sloan Alley became Babylon Way and Sloan Way, respectively, when a city ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[9]

The segment of Sloan Way from Hollydale Way to Tabor Street, joining Sloan Way and Babylon Way, was laid out in February 1925 in a plan of lots by Rev. John M. Woshner.[10] Babylon Way was made part of Sloan Way that April.[11]
