This alley was laid out in 1882 in a plan of lots by Mrs. M. L. McGunnegle, though that plan did not give it a name.[1] It was named Hazel Alley by an Esplen borough ordinance in 1893.[2]
Esplen Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh in January 1906.[3] That September, a Pittsburgh city ordinance renamed many streets and alleys in the former borough to fix duplicates. To avoid confusion with Hazel Street in the Lower Hill District, Hazel Alley was changed to Hollydale Way.[4]
