Allen Avenue (until 1881)
Origin of name Joseph Allen

This street was first laid out as Allen Avenue in 1866 in the original plan of Allentown, laid out by Boyd and Allen on the former property of Joseph Allen,[1] for whom Allentown and Allen Avenue were named. It was extended south of the Washington Turnpike (today Warrington Avenue) in a plan of lots by Thomas S. Maple, recorded in 1870.[2]

The South Side boroughs, including Allentown, were annexed by Pittsburgh in 1872.[3] In 1881, a Pittsburgh city ordinance officially established the names of all thoroughfares in the enlarged city; it changed Allen Avenue to Allen Street.[4]
