Zara Way
Neighborhood Middle Hill
Zara Alley (until 1914)

This alley formerly ran between and parallel to Perry Street and Kirkpatrick Street, between Bedford Avenue and Webster Avenue.[1]

The surrounding area was laid out in a plan of lots by William Porter in 1851, though this plan did not include this alley.[2] The alley is shown in the 1872 Hopkins atlas, though it is not labeled.[3] It was named Zara Alley by a city ordinance in 1881,[4] and this was confirmed by another ordinance in 1910.[5]

This alley does not exist today, though it is not clear when it disappeared. It probably survived, at least on paper, until at least 1914, at which point it would have become Zara Way as a consequence of an ordinance that changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[6] It appears, unlabeled, in the 1923 Hopkins atlas;[7] "Zara Way" is listed in the 1928 Polk directory, though with the qualification "Not open";[8] and it appears as a short unlabeled stub in maps as late as 1955.[9][10]

On the other hand, in 1917 a city ordinance assigned the name Zara Way to a different alley in Beltzhoover (today Zelda Way).[11] Apparently at that time the city did not believe this name was already in use.
