Wilkinsburg Avenue was laid out in 1892 in Peter D. and Mary E. Perchment's addition to the Borough of Brushton.[1] It is named for the nearby Borough of Wilkinsburg.

Today's East Hills neighborhood, including Wilkinsburg Avenue, was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1906,[2] and later that year the name Wilkinsburg Avenue was officially established by a city ordinance.[3]
